What I’ve Seen After 47 Years as An Optician and Why The Right Sunglasses Matter
By Bob Pino, Optician & Founder of Hook Optics
I’ve been an optician for 47 years. I’ve adjusted glasses for toddlers, anglers, grandparents, boat captains, teachers, you name it. And after four decades behind that counter, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty:
The sun is harder on your eyes than most people think.
I’ve seen the damage up close, year after year. Cataracts forming too early. Pterygium growing across the whites of the eyes in people who spent their lives on the water. Eyelids with sun damage that required surgery. Folks who assumed “it won’t happen to me,” until one day it did.
And so much of it could have been prevented with the right sunglasses.
The Truth Nobody Tells You About Sunglasses
Most people think sunglasses are just about comfort or style. But here’s what actually happens:
-
UV rays hit your eyes every day, even when it’s cloudy.
-
They bounce off water, pavement, sand and snow.
-
Over time, that exposure adds up, just like a lifetime of sun on your skin.
The result?
Damage you don’t feel in the moment… but it shows up later in life.
I’ve seen it more times than I can count.
The Mistake I See All The Time
A lot of folks buy cheap sunglasses because they’re dark or trendy.
But here’s the part that still surprises people:
Dark lenses without proper UV protection can be more dangerous than no sunglasses at all.
Why?
Because dark lenses make your pupils relax and open wider. If that lens isn’t blocking UV, you’re letting even more radiation into your eye.
That’s when the long-term damage starts.
This is why tiny fashion frames and bargain-bin sunglasses do almost nothing to protect you, they’re all shade and no shield.
What You Really Need To Protect Your Eyes
After 47 years in this industry, these are the standards I live by:
-
100 percent UVA and UVB protection (UV400)
-
A lens that actually blocks radiation, not just tinted plastic
-
A frame that covers the eye well and cuts light from the sides
-
Super clear sunglasses worn year-round, not just in July
This is the foundation. It’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity.
Why We Built Hook Optics This Way
When our family started Hook Optics, we didn’t build sunglasses because it sounded fun. We built Hook Optics to be better than what's out there. We built them because I’ve spent a lifetime watching people lose vision they could have protected by investing in a good pair of sunglasses.
That’s why every Hook Optics lens - Hydroo, ThermoForce, every single one we make - is fully polarized and delivers 100 percent UV protection. No shortcuts. No “good enough.” Just real protection.
Our lenses are engineered for clarity, durability and long days in the sun. And they’re trusted by captains, anglers and everyday people who make a living in the outdoors.
We built them for the people we serve, because we’ve seen the consequences when sunglasses don’t do their job.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after four decades as an optician, it’s this:
your eyes deserve better than cheap sunglasses so don’t wait until it’s too late. Protect them now with Hook Optics. They’re more than sunglasses. They’re the result of 47 years of knowing what works, what fails, and what truly lasts, built from a lifetime of real-world experience to keep your eyes safer for every day ahead of you.
