White Marlin Open: The Week Every Offshore Angler Waits For

Every August, the docks of Ocean City come alive.

Crews make their final preparations. Boats are polished. Conversations turn to weather forecasts, water temperatures, rigging baits, and the one bite that could change everything.

From August 3-8, 2026, the 53rd Annual White Marlin Open returns to Ocean City, Maryland, bringing together hundreds of boats and anglers from around the world to compete in the richest billfish tournament on earth.

For one week, Ocean City becomes the center of the offshore fishing world.

More Than a Fishing Tournament

The White Marlin Open is more than a competition. It is a tradition that has brought generations of anglers together since 1974.

To better understand what makes this tournament so special, Hook Optics' own Captain Anthony Pino sat down with White Marlin Open founder Jim Motsko for Episode 1 of Saltwater Experiences.

During their conversation, Jim shares the story of how the tournament began with just 57 boats, how it has grown into an event that has awarded more than $71 million in prize money, and why he believes the people, traditions, and camaraderie are what truly define the White Marlin Open.

He also discusses the new three-day fishing format for 2026, the tournament's continued commitment to conservation, and his passion for making the event better every year while preserving the values that made it successful in the first place.

If you're planning to attend this year's tournament, it's a conversation every offshore angler should watch.

The passion Jim shares throughout the interview can be seen in every part of today's White Marlin Open.

Built Around the Anglers

One of the biggest changes for 2026 is the addition of an extra fishing day.

Instead of being locked into specific dates, teams can now choose the best three fishing days based on offshore conditions. It is a change designed to improve fairness while recognizing the realities of modern offshore fishing.

It is another example of how the tournament continues to evolve without losing the traditions that made it famous.

98% of all Billfish are Released

The White Marlin Open has also become a leader in billfish conservation.

Today, more than 98% of all billfish caught during the tournament are released, helping protect these incredible fish for future generations while preserving the excitement of competitive offshore fishing.

The result is a tournament that celebrates both world-class competition and responsible stewardship of the ocean.

Why Tournament Week Is So Special

Even if you are not fishing, White Marlin Open week is something every angler should experience.

Each afternoon, thousands of spectators gather around the scales as boats return from offshore. Families cheer. Crews swap stories from the canyons. The anticipation builds with every fish that comes through the inlet because nobody knows if the next boat could be carrying a tournament-winning catch.

The atmosphere is unlike anything else in sportfishing.
